چکیده

Crossflow-induced laminar-turbulent transition and the initial stages of turbulence are investigated by means of spatial direct numerical simulations for the accelerating 3-D flat-plate boundary layer of the ”Querströmungsprinzipexperiment” of the DLR-Göttingen [1]. The complete 3-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved marching in time on the basis of a 4-order Runge-Kutta scheme. Fourier spectral expansions and 6-order compact finite differences are used for discretization in space. In accordance with the experiment, both steady and traveling crossflow modes are excited. Attention is focused on the non-linear interaction between vortical structures generated by the primary instabilities. The growth of high-frequency secondary instabilities is also observed. Classical turbulent quantities are evaluated for the region downstream of the laminar breakdown.

Secondary instability of superposed steady and unsteady crossflow vortices

Laminar-turbulent transition in a 3-D boundary layer under controlled simultaneous forcing of unstable steady and unsteady crossflow waves is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations. Mechanisms and passive control of crossflow-vortex-induced transition in a three-dimensional boundary layer

Crossflow-vortex-induced laminar breakdown in a three-dimensional flat-plate boundary-layer flow is investigated in detail by means of spatial direct numerical simulations. The base flow is generic for an infinite swept wing, with decreasing favourable chordwise pressure gradient. First, the downstream growth and nonlinear saturation states initiated by a crossflow-vortex-mode packet as well as...

Control of Crossflow-Vortex Induced Transition: DNS of Pinpoint Suction

Laminar-turbulent breakdown in a swept-wing boundary layer is typically caused by secondary instabilities of steady crossflow vortices (CFVs). So far, boundary-layer suction for laminar flow control in three-dimensional boundary layers has been applied to reduce the crossflow and thus the growth of the primary vortices only. We investigate the influence of strong, localized suction (pinpoint su...

Transition mechanisms induced by travelling crossflow vortices in a three-dimensional boundary layer

The laminar breakdown induced by purely travelling crossflow vortices in a threedimensional flat-plate boundary-layer flow is investigated in detail by means of spatial direct numerical simulations. The base flow considered is generic for an infinite swept wing, with decreasing favourable chordwise pressure gradient and a sweep angle of 45◦. First, the primary downstream growth and nonlinear sa...

Numerical Simulation of Crossflow-Transition Control using Pinpoint Suction

Laminar-turbulent transition in swept-wing boundary layers is typically caused by secondary instabilities of steady crossflow vortices (CFVs). So far, suction for laminar flow control (LFC) in three-dimensional boundary layers has been applied to reduce the crossflow and thus the growth of the primary CFV modes to CFVs. We investigate the influence of strong, localized suction (pinpoint suction...
